When a baby comes into the world, Allah (swt) provides all he needs, including food. Breastmilk is one of the first forms of rizq (provision), a newborn receives. Subhan’Allah, it is the perfect form of nourishment for the child’s mind, body and soul. Ar-Razzaq is a beautiful name of Allah which means “The One who creates all means of nourishment and subsistence. The One who is the giver of all things beneficial, both physical and spiritual. The One who provides everything that is needed.” Is He not Ar-Razzaq when he supplies a mother with free, flowing milk for her newborn child? The translation of verses 2-3 in Surat Al-Talaq states “…And whoever fears Allah, He will make a way out for him. And will provide for him from where he does not expect.” Breastmilk is a miracle because it is created through a mostly unknown, complex process and is composed of ingredients that are still being discovered today! For decades, companies have tried to imitate it by producing fancy powdered formula, but have been unsuccessful. Even the most expensive formula does not have the abundant benefits of human milk. Yet many Muslim families today choose formula without realizing what a gift Allah has already provided. The translation of Surah Al-Maa’idah verse 2 states “”And upon Allah rely if you are believers.” If we indeed strive to be true believers, let us trust in Allah (swt), and make intention to breastfeed our children for the full term of 2 years.
