The Benefits of Black Seed for Breastfeeding

Update: I have written a new, expanded version of this article with the latest research and safety guidance: Black Seed for Breastfeeding Mothers: What the Sunnah and the Science Say.

The translation of Al-Bukhari, hadith 5364, narrated from Abu Hurayrah states that the Prophet (saws) said: “In the black seed is healing for every disease except death”.

While black cumin is not recommended for use during pregnancy (because it can cause contractions), it is completely safe and beneficial for breastfeeding women:

  • Increases milk supply
  • Strengthens immune system
  • Enhances nutrition as a significant source of fatty acids, proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals.
  • Prior to feedings, black seed oil can be topically applied to protect skin on nipples
  • Dampened tea bags can help soothe sore, cracked or bleeding nipples

If you do not have any, it’s definitely worth it to buy some!
